Navy awards $80.8 million production contract for Joint Standoff Weapon |
|
The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) awarded an $80.8 million contract last week to Raytheon Company for the production of the Joint Standoff Weapon (AGM-154-A) for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force. The contract is for 337 JSOW-As (313 for the Navy and 24 for the Air Force). Work will be performed at Raytheon's Missile Systems in Tucson, Ariz. and will be completed by February 2005. "This is a significant increase in the number of JSOWs we've bought in the last two years, and we can do it because of the impressive way Raytheon and the entire JSOW team has met and solved some difficult technical challenges," said Capt. Bob Wirt, the Navy's JSOW program manager. "JSOW-A is on schedule, on cost and meeting performance requirements. Great job!" JSOW is a joint Navy and Air Force program. It is a family of low-cost, air-to-ground weapons that employ an integrated Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation system that guides the weapon to the target. The JSOW family uses a common and modular weapon body capable of carrying various payloads. The AGM-154A variant dispenses BLU-97 combined-effect bomblets for use against soft and area targets. It is produced for use on the F/A-18, AV-8B, F-16, F-15, B-1, B-2 and B-52 aircraft. NAVAIR provides advanced warfare technology through the efforts of a seamless, integrated, worldwide network of aviation technology experts. From professional training to carrier launch and recovery; from sensor data to precision targeting and real-time communications; from aircraft and weapons development to successful deployment and sustainment; NAVAIR provides dominant combat effects and matchless capabilities to the American warfighter. |
