New Hamilton Sundstrand units focus on Homeland Security, Soldier of Future

WINDSOR LOCKS, USA- North America, Connecticut, Mar 17, 2003

Hamilton Sundstrand has formed two new business enterprises, Homeland Security Systems and Land Systems, to address emerging market needs in infrastructure protection and for outfitting soldiers of the future.

According to Ed Francis, vice president and general manager of HS Space, Land & Sea, “We will use the great technologies we’ve developed and the experience we’ve gained in our space-related work over the years to win new business in these important areas. In homeland security, there are major efforts under way to protect key infrastructure facilities from many threats, including chemical and biological weapons, and we have proven capabilities in this area.”

The company’s Sensor Systems unit in Pomona, Calif., won a contract late last year to deliver up to 31 chemical/biological detection units for a U.S. Army program. This technology, Francis said, can also be used to protect buildings and screen mail. As a matter of fact, a prototype Hamilton Sundstrand commercial device last year demonstrated the capability to detect minute amounts of anthrax simulants in sealed envelopes on mail sorting lines.

Hamilton Sundstrand experience in designing life-support and regenerable environmental control systems for space applications is directly applicable to the manned ground vehicle segment of the Future Combat System and the Army’s Objective Force Warrior program. “We’ve learned a lot over the years about how to keep human beings alive and functioning in the harsh environment of space and there’s no question that some of that knowledge can help outfit tomorrow’s soldiers, who want to travel light and comfortably in some very difficult climates.”

The Homeland Security Systems and Land Systems enterprises will be managed by Mike Linsenbigler and include employees based in Pomona, California, and Windsor Locks, Connecticut.

Hamilton Sundstrand, a leading worldwide supplier of advanced aerospace and industrial products, is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX). The company employs about 17,000 worldwide and is headquartered in Windsor Locks, Conn. Hamilton Sundstrand has been involved with the U.S. space program since its inception and is NASA’s prime contractor for the spacesuit.
