NATO OPERATION DISPLAY DETERRENCE SET TO BEGIN IN TURKEY
NATO AFSOUTH Press Release
Naples, 13 March 2003. The Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR),
General James L Jones, US Marine Corps, has today approved the plan for
Operation DISPLAY DETERRENCE, NATO’s selective defence of Turkey
and Allied forces in Turkey.
The objective of this operation is twofold; firstly to defend Turkey’s
territory and airspace from missile threats through the deployment of
three Dutch batteries of Patriot ground-based, air defence missile systems
to reinforce NATO’s Integrated Extended Air Defence System (NATINEADS)
from their sites in Diyarbakir and Batman, South Eastern Turkey; and secondly
to provide an early warning and detection system through the deployment
of NATO E3A AWACS aircraft to their Forward Operating Base at Konya, Turkey.
SACEUR is the strategic commander of the operation with the Commander
in Chief Allied Forces Southern Europe (CINCSOUTH) Admiral Gregory G Johnson,
US Navy, working under his authority as the Joint Force Commander. The
Commander Allied Air Forces Southern Europe, Lt. Gen. Glen W. Moorhead
III, USAF, will exercise command and control over NATO air defence assets
currently deployed in Turkey through the Commander of Combined Air Operation
Center 6, Lt. Gen. Faruk Comert, Turkish Air Force.
As the NATO member nations contribute to the defence of Turkey’s
territorial integrity, a clear message is broadcast to the international
community: the Alliance’s solidarity is still its priority, when
one of its members requires assistance it will be provided. The Alliance
presence is purely to contribute to the defence of one of its members,
Turkey, in accordance with its obligations under the North Atlantic Treaty.
