AFGHANISTAN: Bomb explosion next to WFP compound

KABUL, 7 March 2003 (IRIN) - The World Food Programme (WFP), reported a bomb explosion next to its compound in the eastern city of Jalalabad on Wednesday.

“The explosion took place at 12:15 [PM] on one of the walls of the WFP compound and fortunately no one injured or killed,” Marya Reha, an assistant public information officer for WFP, told IRIN in the capital Kabul.

According to the United Nations Special Mission for Afghanistan (UNAMA), following the incidence, a second explosion took place at approximately 1400 in front of the city's municipal electric office in the city centre.

So far no one has been arrested or claimed responsibility for the two attacks. "Investigations are being carried out by the local authorities,” Manoel de Almeida e Silva, a spokesman for UNAMA, told IRIN. He said the explosion was caused by a small, improvised explosive device (IED) that had gone off on the east road beside the WFP office.

Its the third such attack on the agency in five weeks. "On 27 February, three armed men on motor bikes fired on our two-vehicle convoy in Janee Khail district of the southern province of Pakteka, fortunately there were no injuries," Reha said.

In addition, on January 30th there was a similar attack on WFP workers while their vehicle was on mission. “Two WFP employees and one NGO worker were attacked by armed men in the same road,” Reha said, adding no one was hurt although their car was sprayed with bullets.
