PEARL HARBOR, HI--USS Olympia (SSN 717) earned the 2002 Commander, Submarine Squadron Three Battle Efficiency "E" and the 2002 Commander, Submarine Squadron Three Deck Seamanship White "D."

The Battle Efficiency "E" is awarded annually to the submarine that exhibits the highest state of departmental readiness in their group to carryout their wartime tasks. A submarine's performance during weapons inspections, training exercises, tactical readiness examination, operational performance, and overall readiness all contribute to the award.

In January 2002, USS Olympia returned from a very successful Western Pacific deployment, during which it directly supported Operation Enduring Freedom. In August 2002, Olympia helped train prospective commanding officers to hone their tactical skills at sea. In November 2002, Olympia participated in the pre-deployment workup exercises for the USS Carl Vinson Battle group.

"Morale is high throughout the boat. Each crewmember set high standards and sustained excellent performance throughout the year," said crewmember, Fire Technician 2nd Class Christopher J. Carlson. "All divisions onboard worked together to earn the Battle "E", which gives everyone a sense of accomplishment."

Submarine Squadron Three Commander, Capt. William French, presented the Battle "E" award to the crew in early January.

Cmdr. Paul A. Marconi, USS Olympia commanding officer, accepted the award for the ship and stated, "We are pleased that Olympia lived up to its motto, Este Paratus (we are ready), and look forward to another successful year. The crew performed wonderfully throughout the year."
