  • AIR FORCE HELICOPTER CRASHES IN AFGHANISTAN CENTCOM 23 Mar 2003 -- A U.S. Air Force HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter crashed 18 miles north of Ghazni, Afghanistan, at approximately 11:20 am (EST) while conducting a medical evacuation mission. The crash was not the result of enemy action.

  • CHECHNYA VOTE VOA 23 Mar 2003 -- Russian officials say more than 50-percent of eligible voters went to the polls for a referendum in Chechnya, making the vote valid under Russian law. The results are expected Monday.
  • CHECHNYA VOTE VOA 23 Mar 2003 -- Chechens are voting in a Kremlin-backed constitutional referendum that promises wide autonomy for the breakaway republic within the Russian Federation. Chechen separatist rebels have already said they will only accept full independence, and earlier threatened to disrupt the poll.

  • ISRAEL-FENCE VOA 23 Mar 2003 -- Israel is preparing to extend a controversial security fence in the West Bank farther eastward, in order for it to encompass more Israeli settlements. Palestinian officials have condemned the move, saying it amounts to Israel effectively seizing more territory.

  • W-H-O/ASIAN FLU VOA 23 Mar 2003 -- A team of experts from the World Health Organization is in Beijing trying to verify whether a flu-like illness reported in China is linked to an outbreak of a mysterious type of pneumonia in Southeast Asia and other regions in the world. The latest W-H-O figures put the number of suspected cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome at nearly 390, including 11-deaths.
  • SLOVENIA REFERENDUM VOA 23 Mar 2003 -- The tiny former Yugoslav republic of Slovenia are voting on whether to join NATO and the European Union. But concern about the U-S-led war in Iraq has made the outcome regarding NATO membership uncertain.
