Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group to Begin Deployment

NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- More than 4,000 Sailors and Marines attached with the USS Iwo Jima (LHA 7) Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) will begin a scheduled deployment March 4. The ships include the Norfolk-based amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHA 7), the amphibious transport dock ship USS Nashville (LPD 13), and the Little Creek-based amphibious dock landing ship USS Carter Hall (LSD 50).

The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) (MEU/SOC) will also deploy as a major component of the Iwo Jima ARG. The 26th MEU is headquartered at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Others deploying with the Iwo Jima ARG include landing craft utility boats and landing craft, air cushioned vehicles from Assault Craft Unit (ACU) 2, Det. D, and ACU 4, Det. D respectively, Beach Master Unit 2 and Fleet Surgical Team 2.

The Iwo Jima ARG and 26th MEU/SOC have trained in preparation for this deployment through a series of increasingly demanding exercises and operations culminating in their being certified as ready to deploy.
