PHD NSWC UNREP provides Key Support in Making USS Saipan (LHA 2) Combat-ready

The ingenuity and support provided by Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division (NSWC PHD) Underway Replenishment (UNREP) Department was key in enabling the assault ship, USS Saipan (LHA 2), to depart combat-ready on a recent mission, likely to join other U.S. forces moving into the Middle East. Saipan, homeported in Norfolk, VA was one of three amphibious warships that received short-notice orders to deploy and got underway within hours.

Saipan's state of readiness can be attributed largely to the support provided by NSWC PHD. The UNREP Department was instrumental in launching a project that involved upgrading the ship's fuel delivery station machinery, providing a full Integrated Logistics Support package, and training the crew in the operation and maintenance of the new equipment. This project, SHIPALT 1024D, was initiated and completed last year by NSWC PHD as a part of its commitment to continually improve the readiness of UNREP systems aboard the ships it supports.

The selection of the three ships of the Saipan amphibious ready group, already set to deploy in August as the core of an experimental expeditionary strike group, was somewhat unexpected. Saipan, however, left the dock combat-ready, having completed the necessary intermediate training that certified her for blue water combat operations.
