From USS John C. Stennis Public Affairs

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS) completed another successful planned incremental availability (PIA) in San Diego, with USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) becoming the next in what has become a long line of superbly executed carrier availabilities.

Ted Ramirez, Stennis project superintendent, attributes the dedication, knowledge and skill of each individual in the shipyard work force as the cornerstone of the successful project. Every shop and code, including the inside shops back at PSNS, played a vital role.

This overhaul was the largest work package done by PSNS in San Diego, and it included major alterations and repairs to ship systems, as well as innovative repairs normally done only in dry dock.

Capt. James A. McDonell, commanding officer of Stennis, remarked, "We had a great team that had teamwork and trust, but we learned early that we needed to build in discipline so our trust wouldn't turn into complacency."

Originally planned to be a drydocking availability at PSNS beginning in October 2002 and ending in April 2003, Stennis' start date was moved up two-and-a-half months and was performed in San Diego.

Stennis' early completion date means the ship will be able to deploy at least seven-and-a-half months earlier than originally scheduled. This will give more flexibility to those carriers already on extended deployment.
