U.S. SOLDIER INJURED IN MINE ACCIDENT

MACDILL AFB, TAMPA -- A U.S. soldier was injured today in the vicinity of Gardez when the vehicle he was traveling in struck a mine. The incident happened at approximately 9 a.m. local. The soldier was on a routine mounted patrol. The soldier suffered a traumatic amputation of his right foot. He is currently undergoing surgery at the forward operating base in Khowst and is in stable condition.

The soldier's name and unit is being withheld to protect his privacy. The incident is under investigation.
