BAE SYSTEMS Supplies Further Satellite Communications Radomes

BAE Systems C4ISR has supplied the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence with a substantial number of its innovative self-standing fabric radomes to meet operational requirements.

BAE Systems C4ISR originally developed this successful lightweight rapid erection radome, in a partnership with Cameron Balloons Limited which began in 2000, for use by the UK/TSC503 satellite communications programme in challenging tactical operations. It offers the user a significant capability edge by providing a shield against extreme wind and temperature conditions.

The radomes feature an air-inflated envelope measuring eight metres in diameter and six metres high. They can be erected in one hour using a single fan inflation system requiring low operating power. The system can withstand a maximum wind speed of 36 metres per second (80mph) and temperatures ranging from -40C to +50C.

Managing Director of C4ISR's Christchurch-based Communications & Defence Infrastructure business, Paul Laity, commented "Network enabling systems, such as satellite communications, must be able to operate in extreme environmental conditions. Our radomes have been thoroughly proven, both in recent operations and in advanced wind-test facilities. We are proud to extend our Armed Forces' capabilities."

UK/TSC503 is a compact multi-role tactical satellite communications system providing in-theatre users with world-wide access to strategic infrastructure networks.
