Depot announces Early Experience Program

By Kathy Swecker
EEP Administrator

The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) Depot Cherry Point will initiate the Early Experience Program (EEP) effective this summer. EEP is a cooperative endeavor between the depot; the public schools of Craven, Carteret, and Pamlico counties; and Craven, Carteret, and Pamlico county community colleges. It introduces area high school students to federal civil service while providing the depot an opportunity to structure programs that serve the interests and career needs of the student and the long-range manpower needs of the depot. EEP is the high school component of the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) and provides students the opportunity to 'earn as you learn.'

High school juniors are eligible to apply for the program, and selection will be competitive and limited. Students selected for the program will enter at the WG-01 grade level for an eight-week summer work experience. Work experiences will be drawn from a number of trades, including Aircraft Mechanical Parts Repair, Pneudraulics, Sheet Metal Work, Painting, Equipment Cleaning, Machine Tool Work, and Aircraft Engine Repair and Bearings. The summer work experience will provide students with productive and rewarding work projects and also the opportunity to experience federal civil service as a career option.

NAVAIR Depot Cherry Point provides maintenance, engineering, and logistics support on a variety of aircraft, engines, and components for all branches of the U.S. armed forces. Employing almost 4,000 people, the depot is the only source of repair within the continental United States for many jet and rotary wing engines. It is the Navy's center of excellence for rotary wing aircraft, providing engineering and logistics support for all Navy helicopters.

At the conclusion of the summer experience, a determination will be made of the student's interest to continue in the program and the depot's interest in the student progressing to the next level. Students willing to continue and invited to do so will return to high school for their senior year and will begin the process of seeking admission to a community college in an approved curriculum. The opportunity for summer employment will be available following high school graduation, prior to enrolling full-time at the appropriate community college. Selected students will be employed at the WG-02 grade level. Upon the completion of 30 semester hours of college credit, a student will be eligible for the Associate Degree SCEP. His/her work schedule will then be planned around the class schedule and will no longer be restricted to summer employment.

Students interested in applying for the program must be high school juniors in good academic standing, be making satisfactory progress toward graduation, have a satisfactory grade in Algebra I and at least one additional math course, be at least 16 years of age by the application deadline, be a US citizen, and meet security and physical requirements. The application deadline for Summer 2003 is Mar. 14.

For further information, students should contact their high school guidance counselor or the EEP Administrator at (252) 464-5240.
