NSWC Indian Head Delivers New Training System to the Fleet
By Tara Landis, NSWC Indian Head Public Affairs Office
Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head delivered two of three Integrated Maritime Portable Acoustic Scoring & Simulator (IMPASS) Systems to the fleet in December, providing the Navy an entirely new capability to qualify navy gun teams and live-fire exercises without the use of land target ranges.
On the heels of this delivery was Secretary of the Navy Gordon England's 10 January 03 confirmation to the end of U.S. Navy and Marine Corps military training on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico by May 1. With this move, over six decades of live-fire training for U.S. military forces on the island will end. The Department of the Navy has identified a combination of alternatives that will collectively provide equivalent or superior training options. Included are range sites in North Carolina, Florida, and the Gulf of Mexico as well as using computer-aided simulators, such as IMPASS. With this announcement, IMPASS is positioned in the forefront as a desirable and essential military training system.
