SUPSHIP San Diego Supports West 'Gator' Fleet Deployment

By JOC David Nagle, Naval Sea Systems Command Public Affairs

WASHINGTON -- Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair (SUPSHIP) San Diego and its partners from the Navy maintenance community and private industry recently focused their efforts to support the accelerated deployment of several west coast amphibious ships.

SUPSHIP San Diego and its team worked around the clock to complete repairs on USS Boxer (LHD 4), USS Cleveland (LPD 7), USS Comstock (LSD 45), USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), USS Dubuque (LPD 8), USS Anchorage (LSD 36) and USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52) which deployed as part of Amphibious Task Force West to support potential operations in southwest Asia.

SUPSHIP San Diego maintenance team identified 175 casualty reports on the seven ships and repaired 150 of them, allowing the task force to deploy when required.

In addition, the SUPSHIP team focused its maintenance efforts to prepare USS Tarawa (LHA 1), USS Duluth (LPD 6) and USS Rushmore (LSD 47) which deployed a week before the other seven ships.

"Your efforts were truly heroic," wrote Rear Adm. W. Clyde Marsh, Commander, Amphibious Group Three and Commander, Amphibious Task Force West in a Bravo Zulu message to SUPSHIP San Diego. "Your professionalism had a direct impact on our current readiness, enabling the task force to deploy and execute any mission."
