U.S. Deeply Concerned by Continuing Instability in Cambodia
(Statement by State Department Spokesman Richard Boucher) (190) The United States is deeply concerned by the continuing unstable situation in Cambodia following mob violence against the Embassy of the Royal Thai Government January 29, according to State Department Spokesman Richard Boucher. In a statement released February 6, Boucher said, "We are particularly concerned by indications that the government is using the situation to target the political opposition and independent media. " Following is the text of Boucher's statement: (begin text) Office of the Spokesman February 6, 2003 2003/117 Statement by Richard Boucher, Spokesman Situation in Cambodia The United States is deeply concerned by the continuing unstable situation in Cambodia following mob violence against the Embassy of the Royal Thai Government and other Thai establishments on January 29. The United States calls on all sides in Cambodia to do their utmost to bring about stability. We are particularly concerned by indications that the government is using the situation to target the political opposition and independent media. The United States urges a credible investigation based on facts and reflecting international standards. We are continuing to watch the situation closely.
