EADS: German Army's Combat Training Centre fully operational
Friedrichshafen, 06 February 2003
The world’s most advanced Combat Training Centre (CTC) of the German armed forces is now fully operational. Following extensive testing, the Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement accepted the facility near Magdeburg built by a consortium including EADS Dornier GmbH, Diehl Stiftung & Co and STN ATLAS Elektronik. As reported by Dornier GmbH on thursday, EADS Systems & Defence Electronics (S&DE) was responsible for the battlefield instruments including complete communication. System engineering and functional processes were delivered by S&DE Airborne Systems in Friedrichshafen.
Dr. Stefan Zoller, President and CEO of EADS Systems & Defence Electronics: “The successful handling of the diverse communication processes in such a complex environment considerably improves the efficiency of training armed forces.“
In August 1997, the consortium delivered the first version of a smaller mobile combat training centre as a prototype to the German armed forces. This prototype enabled exercises of reinforced combat forces with up to 800 participants. After successful field trials, the CTC was fully expanded and successfully implemented as of late 2001. The currently accepted overall system allows combat training of up to 2,600 participants. All battlefield activities and events are displayed on-line in a control centre and evaluated.
”The signing of the acceptance documents by the Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement is considered by the consortium as an acknowledgement of the good collaboration and the professional project implementation at the military site in Altmark, near Magdeburg”, stated Johann Heitzmann, head of S&DE Airborne Systems.
The CTC-specific training provides the basis for mission-realistic training as well as objective and immediate exercise evaluation. After the combat exercise, a debriefing will be carried out with the help of prepared information and displays so that the participants are given a feedback. Thus, every participants learns about how to improve his performance and about the effects of his decisions on the exercise combat sequence. The emphasis is put on training military commanders.
EADS is a global aerospace and defence company, and is the world’s second largest in terms of revenues, having achieved EUR30.8 billion in 2001. EADS maintains a workforce of more than 100,000 and is a market leader in defence technologies, commercial aircraft, helicopters, space, military transport and combat aircraft, as well as related services.
