NUWC Keyport Provides Emergency Repairs for USS Rodney M. Davis
By NUWC Keyport Division Public Affairs
KEYPORT, Wash. -- Naval Undersea Warfare Center Keyport Division provided a valuable emergency service over the holidays that helped USS Rodney M. Davis (FFG 60) get underway on schedule. The ship turned in two MK 24 handling dollies to Keyport at the end of November for repair. Keyport quickly met the immediate need by repairing and delivering one of these to the ship and ordered material for the second dolly. Just prior to Christmas, the ship requested a quick repair of the remaining MK 24 handling dolly due to an imminent deployment.
Normally closed for the holidays between Christmas and New Year's Day, some of Keyport's Rapid Prototyping and Fabrication Technology department employees were scheduled to work on vertical launch system cables for the Tomahawk missile tubes in support of guided missile submarine conversions. As a result, these employees adjusted their priorities and immediately started the reassembly on December 27 and had the second dolly ready for delivery on January 2.
This repair process not only involved repair work, but weight testing and re-certification for ordnance movement. As an ordnance handling activity, Keyport Division is certified to perform these tests and certifications.
This second handling dolly was scheduled for pick up the morning of January 3, but a ferocious windstorm the night before cut power to the base for about 16 hours. Committed to making an on-time delivery, Keyport employees arrived early and stood by after the base was closed until ship personnel picked up the second dolly.
Davis deployed on January 6 with a full complement of the MK 24 handling dollies due to the special efforts of Keyport's Rapid Prototyping and Fabrication Technology department.
In the past year, Keyport has assisted USS Ford (FFG 54) and USS Bridge (AOE 10) with similar urgent requirements, providing repairs to MK45 hand trucks, putting them back in "A" condition and weight testing them within two weeks.
