MANNED GROUND COMBAT VEHICLES DESIGN TEAM ANNOUNCED FOR FUTURE COMBAT SYSTEMS

WASHINGTON D.C., January 23, 2003. - In conjunction with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), The Army announces the creation of a cooperative design team to develop and integrate the Manned Ground combat Vehicle (MGV) platforms of the Future Combat System (FCS), as part of The Army's Lead System Integrator (LSI) contract.

The MGV team, which consists of General Dynamics Land Systems and United Defense Limited Partnership, will develop the common platform of the FCS family of manned ground vehicles.

This cooperative design team approach enables the Army to reduce development time, eliminate parallel design activities, and facilitate commonality objectives. The Army's goal is to begin fielding of the first FCS unit by 2008 and achieve an initial operational capability by 2010.

FCS, a key transformation program for the U.S. Army, is a networked system of systems that is enabled by unparalleled situational awareness, survivability, deployability and lethality.

The LSI, working in partnership with the Army and DARPA, has total systems integration responsibility for the FCS program. The Army LSI manages the identification, selection and procurement of major systems and subsystems. The Army LSI also assists in the development of operational, systems and technical architectures, which provide links to the Objective Force. The Army LSI role includes leveraging applicable government and commercial activities to help the program meet its goals.

For more information about the FCS program and the Army LSI contact Army Public Affairs at 703-697-7591.
