INTRO: New protests broke out in Ivory Coast's commercial capital, Abidjan, Tuesday following the recent signing of a French-brokered peace agreement to end a four-month rebel war. V-O-A's Luis Ramirez reports from Abidjan.

TEXT: The protests have been going on since Saturday. The demonstrators are angry over the Ivory Coast government's acceptance of a deal that they say gives too many concessions to the rebels.

Tuesday's demonstrations started at the American embassy, where protesters called on the U-S government to intervene in the place of France to end the conflict. U-S embassy officials did not comment on the demonstrators' request.

Many here accuse France - the former colonial power - of pressuring President Laurent Gbagbo into signing the deal.

Tuesday's unrest came despite calls Monday by Mr. Gbagbo for the demonstrators to stay home.

Late Monday, the Ivorian president tried to calm the demonstrators by downplaying the accord, saying it was merely a set of proposals. (Signed)
