Fifth Air Force participates in Fuji-Yama Sakura

YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan - Units from the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, with the Japan Air Self Defense Force and Ground Self Defense Forces will conduct exercise Fuji-Yama Sakura XLIII at various U.S. and Japanese military installations throughout Japan, until Jan 31, 2003.
Yama Sakura is an annual bilateral army command post exercise sponsored by U.S. Army Japan and the Ground Staff Office and rotates among the five regional armies of Japan. Since their inception in 1982, these exercises have focused on the development and refinement of the Japan Self-Defense Forces and U.S. Forces efforts in the areas of bilateral planning, coordination and interoperability.
This year the ground portion of Fuji-Yama Sakura (YS) will be conducted with the Northern Army on the island of Hokkaido, Japan.
Fifth Air Force participates with the Japanese Air Self Defense Force and for the first time, elements of the Pacific Air Forces deployable Air Operations Center will participate from Yokota AB, Fuchu AS, and Hickam AFB.
Fuji-Yama Sakura has been in the planning stages for several months and bears no connection to any real-world events. (PACAFNS)
