First US fighter jets leave German base for possible war on Iraq

BERLIN, Jan 16 (KUNA) -- U.S. fighter jets took off from the Spangdahlem air base in central Germany Thursday flying to the Middle East region for deployment in preparation for the possible war against Iraq.
Colonel Stephen Mueller, commander of the 52nd Fighter Wing, said that 10 US F 16 jets were to take part in training exercises. More than 200 U.S. personnel left the Spangdahlem air base on Sunday on a transport aircraft for the Gulf region where more than 500 soldiers are stationed.
No information was released on their exact destination for security reasons. (end)
