VILSECK, Germany -- Soldiers of V Corps' 94th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy) took their first step towards supporting Operation Enduring Freedom Jan. 9 as they loaded approximately 500 pieces of engineering equipment onto rail cars here for the first leg of the journey.
Soldiers from the battalion will join troops from the U.S. Central Command in the Persian Gulf region and begin supporting Enduring Freedom within the next 30 days, according to battalion Command Sgt. Maj. Scott Landy.
The 94th is configured to take on both peacetime and battlefield missions, ranging from the construction of base camps, roads, runways and bridges, maintaining and repairing buildings and other life-support facilities, to various combat engineer tasks.
Elements of V Corps' 3rd Corps Support Command, 22nd Signal Brigade and 205th Military Intelligence Brigade are also preparing to deploy in support of Enduring Freedom.
Constant missions, training and deployments have prepared the battalion well for such an assignment, said Lt. Col. Paul Grosskruger, battalion commander.
"The best way to train a unit like this is to get them out working, and we've had a long road of preparation, including missions in Kosovo, Poland and Bulgaria," he said. "They're also fully trained in (nuclear, biological and chemical defensive skills), weapons, security, sustainment and supply, and in family readiness."
Landy agreed. "I feel our soldiers are very well prepared and very well trained," he said. "I am very confident that the experience and leadership we have will give us success in any mission we are asked to do."
The soldiers' morale is high too, said Landy.
