ANGOLA-DRC: EC donates 1.1 million euros for Angolan refugees

NAIROBI, 13 January 2003 (IRIN) - The EC has donated 1.1 million euros (US $ 1.16 million) for 60,000 Angolan refugees living in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the commission reported on Friday.

The money, to be administered by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), is for a protection, care and maintenance programme for the refugees.

During Angola's 27-year-long civil war, there was a regular outflow of refugees across the border, particularly to the provinces of Bas Congo and Bandundu in southwestern DRC. Following the Angolan peace agreement signed in April 2002, most of the refugees have indicated their desire to go home. The UNHCR programme covers primary health care and the provision of clean water, sanitation and food distribution until the refugees' repatriation, scheduled for mid-2003, is effected.

The EC's decision to support the UNHCR programme was taken alongside others for Mexico (1 million euros), Yemen (1.6 million euros) and Sudan (1 million euros). The aid is channelled through the Humanitarian Aid Office,ECHO, which comes under the authority of Commissioner Poul Nielson.
