607th Air and Space Communications joins Team Osan

Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea -- The 51st Communications Group reorganized as the 607th Air and Space Communications Group in a short ceremony at the Osan Air Base theater Jan. 7.

The reorganization aligns the 51st Communications Squadron under the 51st Mission Support Group, and it gives the Combined Air Component commander direct oversight of the team that develops, sustains and deploys command and control systems.

Previously, the 751st Communications Squadron under the 51st CG and 607th Combat Communications Squadron under the 607th Air Support Operations Group had provided some of this service, but not under one unified group.

"The nature of our expeditionary business and the shrinking of our budgets, demand that we organize in a way to maximize our efficiencies and resources," said Maj. David Schilling, 607th ACOM. "The change and reorganization meet the new demands that are inevitable in today's Air Force."

From the cold war mission of the 2146th Communications Squadron under Air Force Communications Command to the 51st CS supporting the 51st Fighter Wing under the newly created 51st MSG, the wing at Osan has always been fortunate to have first-class communications throughout its history.

"The event marks yet another chapter in the rich heritage of Air Force communications in Korea," said Col. Frank Brooks, 607th ACOM commander. "Since the inception of the United States Air Force in 1947, Air Force communications has met the needs of the warfighter and has been a contributing factor in the modernization of warfare."

Today's Air Force communications are adapting to the expeditionary concept. Tomorrows Air Force Communications need to be robust, standardized and provide the bandwidth and reach-back needed to meet all of the warfighter's needs in order to meet the Global expeditionary mission. The Air Force motto of "Global Reach, Global Power" is enabled largely by the modernization and evolution of communications technology in the Air Force. (PACAFNS)
