Back on shore: Norwegian Ministry of Defence orders MSP 500

01/08/2003

Originally developed for the army and air force, then discovered and successfully fielded by the German Navy, the Multisensor Platform (MSP) is now making its comeback as the electro-optical system MSP 500 for the airborne forces of the Royal Norwegian Army. With this order, the MSP will for the very first time leave German "soil" and be operated by the armed forces of another country. The Royal Norwegian Air Force will take delivery of a total of 13 MSP 500 systems between February 2004 and 2005, with an option for a further six systems. Norway will then have at its disposal the most advanced MSP system currently available on the market.

The electro-optical sensor is used to identify and track airborne targets and to assign targets to the related missiles. In combination with a radar system, the MSP detects the altitude and range of airborne targets over great distances. The system is also capable of reconnoitering multiple airborne units which a radar only recognizes as a single air vehicle. Sensor data are transmitted to the fire control center via a fiberoptical cable with a range of up to 1 km. The MSP will be operated within the framework of the Norwegian NASAMS-II program (Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System). This mobile system for the close to medium range serves to protect important facilities and is to be operated by the rapid reaction forces. The program has resulted from the Hawk program and is now operated worldwide.

The Land and Airborne Systems division of STN Atlas Elektronik GmbH managed to win the official call for tender for an upgrade of the 15 year old Norwegian EO platforms against US competitors. The order is worth around € 13 million.
