PERTH, Australia -- Sailors aboard USS Shiloh (CG 67) visited Fremantle and Perth, Australia, recently during the cruiser's current Western Pacific deployment.

Fremantle is Western Australia's primary port, and Perth, the only commercial center and major city in Western Australia, with a population of nearly 1.5 million. Both cities have enjoyed a long relationship with the U.S. Navy, as ship's often pull in to the area to afford their crews the opportunity of rest and recreation.

While in Perth, crewmembers explored the downtown malls and restaurants, also spending time on the beaches, including the popular Cottesloe and Scarborough beaches.

Several Sailors met Australian families and were invited into their homes. This occurrence of impromptu "host families" was common during the stay in "The Land Down Under."

Fremantle has numerous excellent restaurants with all types of cuisine, as well as a thriving nightlife. Sailors ventured down Cappucino St. and St. James Sreet in Perth, both of which boasted great restaurants and pubs.

The Swan River Valley, just east of Perth, is home to some of the world's finest vineyards and wineries. Some crewmembers took tours along the Swan River and sampled some of the region's best wines.
