Apra Harbor, Guam--Families, Sailors and residents of Guam welcomed the second of three U.S. Navy submarines to be homeported on Guam during a ceremony held today at Polaris Point.
The twenty-fourth Los Angeles class fast attack submarines constructed by the Navy, USS San Francisco (SSN 711) arrived in Guam today to join USS City of Corpus Christi, which arrived in October, as a member of Submarine Squadron 15.
Guest speakers included Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Marianas Rear Adm. Patrick Dunne, and Guam Chamber of Commerce President Carl Peterson.
"Everyone knows the submarine force as a silent fleet," said Peterson during his welcoming remarks. "But the arrival of the San Francisco echoes a tremendous gong for freedom."
The submarine arrived in Guam on schedule even though the island was hit by Supertyphoon Pongsana on Dec. 8.
Dunne said the day was extremely important for families and friends of the crew of San Francisco, as well as an important day for Guam and the United States of America. "The recent typhoon can't diminish the readiness of the U.S. Submarine Force or the happiness of today," said Dunne.
