TETRAPOL for German Crisis Reaction Forces

Ulm, le 18 décembre 2002

EADS TELECOM Deutschland has landed an order from the Federal Bureau for Information Management and Information Technology for the delivery of TETRAPOL digital radio systems worth several million Euros to the German armed forces. EADS TELECOM announced in Ulm that the radio systems will facilitate flexible military communications during foreign assignments. The first TETRAPOL systems will be delivered in December to help improve the operational readiness and security of the German armed forces in the areas in which they are deployed. As a result, it will be possible to coordinate military operations even more quickly and — of the utmost importance — with security against eavesdropping.
Decision made after extensive testing

As part of the KINTOP project (crisis reaction forces — interoperability), the Bundeswehr Technical Centre for Communications and Electronics in Greding extensively tested digital radio systems from various manufacturers in 2001 and 2002. The German armed forces certified that TETRAPOL is extremely reliable and suitable for practical application, meeting the military’s stringent demands with respect to functionality, availability/fault tolerance, transmission quality, transmission range and illumination in difficult terrain and stability when handling heavy loads.

Changed security situation

EADS Board of Management member Dr. Thomas Enders, responsible for Defence & Civil systems including telecommunications, sees a special challenge in the changed security situation: "Events such as the attacks of 11th September, the catastrophic flooding in eastern Germany and the stationing of crisis reaction forces in Afghanistan are proof of how important efficient communications systems are. A guiding principle of future procurement projects should be to enable close cooperation between the communications and command systems of armed forces and non-military security and rescue organizations on both a national and an international level."

In Europe, TETRAPOL networks are already being used by safety and security forces in Spain, France, Switzerland, Slovakia, Romania and the Czech Republic. In Germany, such systems are used, among others, by the Federal Chancellery, the armed forces, the NATO base in Geilenkirchen and Berlin-Tegel Airport. The latest event at which the TETRAPOL system proved its worth was the NATO Summit in Prague. EADS TELECOM is participating in the competition to introduce a digital radio system for voice and data transmission for use by German safety and security organizations.

EADS TELECOM is the centre of excellence for telecommunications of the EADS Group and a supplier of turnkey telecommunications networks for the public security, defence and civil markets. EADS TELECOM has 3,500 employees in thirteen countries in Europe, Mexico and United States.

TETRAPOL technology has made EADS TELECOM the world leader when it comes to secure digital radio networks. TETRAPOL is an open standard approved for safety and security forces by the ITU and the Schengen Group.
