MOD ANNOUNCES STUDY INTO REVOLUTIONARY AIR DEFENCE SYSTEM

The Royal Navy could get a state-of-the-art air defence system that would give it a vital edge in the battles of the future, following a contract signed today by the Minister for Defence Procurement, Lord Bach.
The system, known as Co-operative Engagement Capability (CEC) works by fusing together information from individual ship's radar with data from the rest of the fleet to create one all-encompassing radar image, giving force commanders an almost perfect picture of the aerial battlefield. This system is already in use with the United States Navy.
The CEC system could prove a revolutionary advance in air and missile defence. By networking the radar, a near perfect 'real-time' picture emerges which allows better and longer range visibility of incoming threats such as missiles and aircraft so ships can take defensive action. It is hoped that the system will eventually be integrated into both the Type 23 Frigate and the Type 45 Destroyer.
Lord Bach said:
"I am delighted to award this important assessment contract for studies into Co-operative Engagement Capability. It is a system that could offer a significant enhancement to the ability to protect themselves against enemy aircraft and missiles. This system will bring together all the information from the networked radar in the battlegroup, reducing the fog-of-war. This will present the Air Defence Commander with a highly accurate picture of all air target movements which will enable him to engage enemy forces quickly and efficiently."
