NEWPORT, RI - Naval Undersea Warfare Center Newport Division recently completed testing of a new monopropellant that could potentially be used as a cleaner fuel alternative for propelling torpedoes. Model Fuel I, a low-cost, wakeless and environmentally friendly monopropellant was tested at Newport Division's propulsion test facility as part of a three-run test series to determine a cleaner alternative for Otto fuel, which the Navy is currently using for torpedo and other propulsion needs.

The test was completed under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between the Newport Division and James R. Moden, Inc. of Bristol, RI.

When burned, Moden Fuel I produces pure water and carbon dioxide. These by-products are non-toxic and safer than the ones associated with current fuel use. Use of Moden Fuel I could significantly reduce or eliminate the expensive collection and disposal of hazardous waste associated with Otto Fuel. Moden Fuel I could also eventually being used in all marine vessels including cruise ships, ferries and pleasure crafts, ensuring a safer boating and ocean environment.

The results of the tests are still being reviewed.
