INTRO: Israeli helicopters have fired missiles at a Palestinian Authority compound in Gaza City. One person was reported killed and four others were wounded in the attack. Larry James reports from Jerusalem.

TEXT: The dead man worked as a security officer at the local Palestinian Authority compound. He was also said to have been a member of a militia associated with Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction.

Palestinian sources said the dead man, Mustafa Sabah, was a member of a group that had carried out numerous attacks on the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip. The group is reported to have executed an especially bold operation last February attacking three Israeli tanks and killing seven Israeli soldiers.

Palestinians described the attack as an assassination.

This is the second Israeli helicopter strike in Gaza this week. Sunday, three suspected militants of the Islamic Jihad group escaped unhurt, running from their car only seconds before it was struck by a missile near the Jabalya refugee camp.

Earlier, the Israeli army says it shot and killed two Palestinian militants hiding in a cave near the West Bank city of Hebron and wounded another trying to infiltrate Israel from the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army says one of its soldiers will face charges for the shooting death of a 95-year-old Palestinian woman Tuesday near the West Bank city of Ramallah.

Elsewhere, 12 Palestinians were arrested Tuesday during operations in the West Bank cities of Bethlehem, Hebron and Nablus. Israel says the operations are aimed at tracking down militants suspected of planning and carrying out attacks on Israelis.

Israeli forces have arrested dozens of suspected Palestinian militants since a Palestinian suicide bomber killed 11 people November 21st on a Jerusalem bus.
