EADS to provide the NGDS self protection suite for the Horizon Frigates of the French Navy

Vélizy, 26 November 2002

EADS, Europe’s leader in aerospace and defence, will increase the self-protection of the Horizon frigates of the French Navy thanks to the New Generation Dagaie System (NGDS).

As the company announced on wednesday 26th November 2002, EADS Systems & Defence Electronics has been awarded a major contract for the self protection of the French Horizon Frigates. The enterprise was selected last October by the Eurosynav SAS consortium (Thalès, DCN and Finmeccanica) which is in charge of the Horizon weapon system to provide two new-generation countermeasures systems in 2004.

"The fact that the NGDS was selected to equip these new-generation frigates highlights the know-how of Systems & Defence Electronics in the field of electronic warfare " said Stefan Zoller, President and CEO of EADS Systems & Defence Electronics (S&DE). “This long tradition of innovative solutions for our customers is the reason why our company is regularly chosen by many navies when it comes to combat systems or electronic warfare systems”.

The NGDS, developed by EADS S&DE, is a countermeasures system that can protect all types of surface vessels against anti-ship missiles and torpedoes. Each system comprises a pair of two-axis-launchers, each equipped with twelve infrared, radar, or acoustic decoys adapted to the threat to be decoyed. The launchers are linked to a computer which selects the best-adapted decoying technique.

The new-generation decoys which equip the NGDS are also intended to be integrated in the countermeasures systems of the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier and of the Cassard and Jean Bart frigates.

With 6,000 employees in Germany, France and the U.K, EADS Systems & Defence Electronics is among Europe’s leading suppliers of advanced defence electronics. Its operational unit Naval & Ground Systems works primarily as a system supplier in land- and ship based air defence applications. It contributes to the development and integration of control and weapons deployment systems for the German F124 frigates and the K130 corvettes.

EADS is a global aerospace and defence Leader, and the world’s second largest in terms of revenues. EADS maintains a workforce of more than 100.000 and is a market leader in defence technologies, commercial aircraft, helicopters, space, military transport and combat aircraft, as well as related services. Its family of leading brands includes the commercial aircraft maker Airbus, Eurocopter, the world’s largest helicopter manufacturer, Astrium, the space company, and MBDA, the world’s second largest missile company.
