Minneapolis, Oct. 31, 2002 – ATK (Alliant Techsystems, NYSE: ATK) has been awarded a $4 million contract from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., to develop a multipurpose "Crash PAD" bomb warhead that can be used to damage biological and chemical agent targets while minimizing environmental effects.

"ATK is proud to be working with the Air Force Research Lab to provide this significant new capability for chemical and biological agent defeat," said Hube Hopkins, president ATK Integrated Defense.

ATK Integrated Defense will work as the systems integrator on a contractor team consisting of ATK Tactical Systems, Pine Bluff Arsenal, and ATK Thiokol Propulsion. ATK Integrated Defense is a leading developer and producer of air and land warfare systems.

"This opportunity to work as a prime systems integrator for AFRL is a significant step in our strategy to expand ATK’s contribution in the air-to-ground market," said Dan Murphy, group vice president, Precision Systems. "With the recent acquisition of the assets of Science and Applied Technology, Inc., now called ATK Missile Systems, we are poised for a much bigger role in the air weapons market."
