Oct 28, 2002

Minneapolis, Oct. 28, 2002 – ATK (Alliant Techsystems, NYSE: ATK) has acquired the assets of Science and Applied Technology, Inc. (SAT, Inc.), a privately-held company with facilities in Woodland Hills, Calif. The core business of SAT, Inc. is the design, engineering, development, and testing of precision-guided military weapon systems.

SAT, Inc., which has annual sales of approximately $40 million and approximately 165 employees, will remain in Woodland Hills as part of ATK’s Precision Systems Group.

"SAT, Inc. has a world-class cadre of engineers and technical people who are experts in systems and software engineering, GPS guidance and navigation control, and millimeter-wave radar," said Paul David Miller (PDM), chairman and chief executive officer. "Their critical skills and leading-edge programs will significantly strengthen our precision capabilities lane of excellence."

SAT, Inc. programs include the U.S. Navy’s Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile (AAGRM), which is being developed as the successor to the existing AGM-88 High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM). AARGM employs a multi-sensor guidance system capable of engaging enemy air defenses even after shut down of radar emissions.

Michael Costantini, AARGM program manager for SAT, Inc., sees significant benefits in joining forces with ATK.

"Coupled to ATK’s breadth of defense expertise and depth of manufacturing capability, we are all the more confident of executing this essential program to the Navy’s complete satisfaction through full-rate production," said Costantini.

The SAT, Inc. operation has been renamed ATK Missile Systems Company. It is the fifth operating unit of ATK’s Precision Systems Group, which is involved in a broad spectrum of programs that provide precision-fire and strike capabilities for ground, naval, and air forces. The group’s other four units are ATK Tactical Systems, ATK Ammunition Systems, ATK Integrated Defense, and ATK Precision Fuze.

ATK is a $2.1 billion aerospace and defense company with leading positions in precision capabilities, propulsion, composite structures, and munitions. The company, which is headquartered in Edina, Minn., employs approximately 11,500 people and has three business groups: Precision Systems, Aerospace, and Ammunition.
