CRANE, Ind. -- Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane Division and Naval Sea Systems Command's (NAVSEA) Undersea Defensive Warfare Systems (PMS 415) and Naval Surface Fire Support (PMS 392) programs have teamed to support mission critical requirements for the Navy's submarine force.
Crane Division, PMS 392 and PMS 415 devised an approach to correct a high failure rate of an external cable for the Countermeasure Set, Acoustic (CSA) MK 2 Mod 1 system, which enables Los Angeles class submarines to fire countermeasures. Countermeasures are used to diverge torpedoes if a submarine is fired upon and are essential to submarines' safety and survivability.
PMS415, PMS392, and Crane Division, as the In Service Engineering Agent for the system, devised a "two pronged" approach to correct this high failure rate. First, they initiated a cable replacement program for CSA MK 2 MOD 1 outboard cables. Since August 2001, six platforms were equipped with the new and improved external cable system.
Secondly, Crane Division was designated the interim supply support activity for CSA MK 2 cables, including support of the platforms retaining the original cables. NAVSEA purchased all CSA MK 2 MOD 1 cables in the Naval supply inventory, and Crane Division gradually provided those back to the Fleet at no cost. As available cable inventories decreased, Crane Division established a cable reutilization program. This program receives fleet return cables, screens, tests and recertifies them as serviceable assets. This approach has enabled Crane Division to respond to numerous urgent requests from the submarine force for CSA MK 2 cables for its deployed submarines.
By promptly fulfilling these urgent requests, Crane Division is essential in keeping America's submarine forces safe and ready to support our nation's defense.
