Thales to supply dipping sonar to Raytheon for U.S. Navy order

23 October 2002

Thales Underwater Systems (TUS) has been awarded a contract by Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, Portsmouth, Rhode Island, to supply outboard arrays and reeling machines for four AN/AQS-22 Dipping Sonar systems Raytheon will provide for the US Navy's MH-60 R Multi Mission Helicopter.

The arrays and reeling machines Thales will provide are variants of the TUS FLASH Dipping Sonar, adapted for use by the US Navy.

The four systems comprise the first batch of Low Rate Initial Production orders for the latest version of the MH-60 which is due to enter US Navy service in late 2005 .

Under the contract Raytheon, the Prime Contractor, will supply the Sonar Transmitter and Receiver, and integrate the system.

The AN/AQS-22 successfully completed stand-alone Operational Testing in 1999 , and has since been extensively operated with the MH-60R helicopter during development testing. During recent tests, the system was successfully exercised in shallow and deep water flights.

The TUS FLASH Dipping Sonar has already proved itself in service with the UK Royal Navy on the EH101 MERLIN helicopter and has become the NATO standard fit with orders from France and Norway for the NH-90 helicopters . Sweden has also recently ordered a variant of the FLASH for their NH-90 helicopters adapted to meet the special conditions in the Baltic. The FLASH system is also proposed for the new Canadian Maritime Helicopter to replace the Seaking.
