Key West Awarded $75 Million Plus in Navy Contracts and Services in FY 2002

KEY WEST, Fla. (NNS) -- During the last fiscal year, the Navy awarded more than $75 million in military construction and services contracts at Naval Air Facility Key West. The contracts were awarded by Southern Division, Naval Facilities Engineering Command in Charleston, S.C., and include a diversified scope of projects at the Naval Air Facility.

The projects include barracks renovations, runway paving and repairs, design and construction of a new six-story air traffic control tower, demolition projects as well as other significant operational and repair requirements.

"These military construction and service contracts are extremely important to our facility and our Sailors," remarked Capt. Lawrence Cotton, commanding officer of Naval Air Facilty Key West. "The investment of significant Navy funds at Key West will enable us to provide our Sailors with modern, renovated living barracks - a top quality of life issue for the Navy. Additionally, the numerous renovations and construction of new operational facilities will keep NAF Key West as a leader in tactical aviation training."

Naval Air Facility Key West provides joint-service aircrew training for transient tactical aviation squadrons throughout various branches of service. During calendar year 2001, the total air traffic count for the facility was 145,942. A total of 14,737 aircrew personnel representing 256 squadrons trained at the facility during 2001.

A listing of construction and service contracts exceeding $1 million in Fiscal Year 2002 at NAF Key West includes the renovation of barracks; a special project to renovate the administrative spaces mechanical and electrical systems, and the hangars main-bay fire suppression system; and the design and construction of an air-traffic control tower and a combined air operations/passenger terminal facility.
