RAFAEL Unveil an Array of Products Facilitating Forced Entry
21 October 2002 -- RAFAEL has recently completed the type classification process with the US Army, for the Grenade Rifle Entry Munition (GREM), a derivative of the Simon Rifle Launch Entry Munition. Acquisition of the weapons for US Army and Special Forces use are expected to follow soon. Procurement by US Marine Corps is also considered. GREM is a rifle grenade that enables infantry units to perform forced entry through locked doors from a safe distance. The weapon is designed for operation by standard 5.56 assault weapons such as the M-16 or M4 carbine. Utilizing a proven “bullet trap” mechanism, GREM is safely operated by standard ammunition.
The weapon has been operational for several years with Israel’s Defense Forces and several European Armies, Special Forces and security units. During the type classification process, the US Army evaluated the weapon and its operational concept, within Force XXI advanced warfighting experimentation. Evaluations were conducted with infantry squads and Special Operations units. GREM was designated one of five Warfighting Rapid Acquisition Programs (WRAP) to enable accelerate procurement of relatively low cost, high leverage systems, which performed well in experimentation.
Other programs which address specific requirements of operations in urban terrain (MOUT) are the shoulder launched Wallbuster capable of breaching a man-sized hall in a double- or triple-layered brick walls. Wallbuster is designed as a shoulder fired weapon, and can be operated from a safe distance or from close-in position, in a confined space. RAFAEL also developed a new BDM 60 bunker buster weapon, which was fired safely from confined spaces, and destroy fortified positions and material from extended range. The weapon is based on a proven shoulder launched rocket system. RAFAEL is introducing the new weapon, as part of its collaboration with General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products (GDATP).
