WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Naval Sea Systems Command's Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair (SUPSHIP) Portsmouth, Va., in conjunction with the U.S. Atlantic Fleet, has awarded four, multi-ship, multi-option contracts for depot maintenance on ships homeported in the Hampton Roads area.

Two contracts valued at $70 million were awarded to Norfolk Shipbuilding & Drydock Corp. for maintenance on six amphibious dock landing ships. Colanna's Shipyard was awarded a $52-million contract for maintenance on five guided-missile frigates. Metro Machine was awarded a $109-million contract for maintenance on four amphibious transport dock ships.

Multi-ship, multi-option contracts allow the Navy and contractors to establish long term relations between the ship and the contractor, reduce the learning curve, cut costs and improve responsiveness for emergent work and growth.

These contracts also provide program stability and incentive for the contractor to plan for facilities investment and provide a level loading that results in improved contractor efficiency and cost savings.

These contracts will maximize efficiency in ship depot maintenance and repair in the Hampton Roads area, home for much of the Atlantic Fleet. The contracts will also provide enhanced flexibility and readiness for Navy ships and their crews.

"Multi-option, multi-ship contracting will mean a better end product for all of our ships going into the yards for repairs," said Adm. Robert Natter, Commander, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. "This form of contracting will soon enable us to more efficiently and effectively manage ships' maintenance schedules, which means improved readiness for operations."

These contracts exemplify NAVSEA's commitment to maximizing public/private partnerships, industrial efficiency and fleet readiness.
