BAE SYSTEMS innovates to inform Maritime Commanders
02 Oct 2002
BAE Systems C4ISR and QinetiQ recently partnered to establish and sponsor an Operational Database Rapid Reaction Facility (ODBRRF) fleet trial on HMS ARK ROYAL, overlapping the NATO Joint Warrior Interoperability Demonstration '02 (JWID02).
Whilst deploying outside UK waters and briefly participating in JWID02, the ship's staff successfully and routinely downloaded JWID-derived information using the vessel's satellite communications system. Normal day-to-day usage of onboard operational communications systems or equipment was not affected.
This trial demonstrated the ability to transmit large volumes of data reliably over long distances via satellite communications as part of a network-enhanced capability. Such a capability will keep deployed afloat commanders advised of operational developments and ensure onboard computer-based systems are updated with current information.
As a direct result of the success, and at the naval commander's request, the trial has been extended.
The ODBRRF trial report is now being prepared. It will now be carefully studied by BAE Systems with a view to applying the experience gained to other programmes.
