
Modernized L-39 advanced trainer program in the Ukraine.

The program was a joint effort of AVIRS, Progress Design Bureau & Motor Sich and IAI'S Lahav Division.
Ben Gurion International Airport, 18 September 2002 - The upgraded L-39 advanced trainer made its first flight recently in the Ukraine and all systems performed successfully. The modernized L-39 was displayed publicly for the first time at the 3rd International Aerospace Show AVIASVIT XXI, held in Kiev, Ukraine, September 14-18,2002.
The modernization was a joint effort of AVIRS, Progress Design Bureau & Motor Sich of the Ukraine and the Israel Aircraft Industries' LAHAV Division. AVIRS, with wide experience in the L-39 aircraft, was responsible for improving the engine and aircraft systems. IAI's Lahav Division was responsible for the integration of the comprehensive avionics package.
The L-39 upgrade package includes an advanced "Glass Cockpit", a Multi-Function Color Display (MFCD) 6x8, an Head-Up Display (HUD), a Mission Display Processor (MDP), a Virtual Radar, HOTAS operation, an Inertial Navigation System (INS/GPS), a Mission Air Data Computer (MADC), and a Debriefing System.
The modernized L-39 is suitable for advanced pilot training for all types of modern fighter aircraft such as the MiG-29, SU-22, Su-27, SU-30 & the F-16. The L-39 is in service with numerous air forces around the world and the upgrade project partners, AVIRS and IAI, are currently briefing potential customers on the modernization program.
IAI's Lahav Division is a world leader in the modernization of trainer aircraft including the US Air Force T-38 (more than 500 aircraft), the Spanish Air Force F-5B, the Turkish Air Force F-5 and many others.
The actual date of the first flight was August 30, 2002.
