General Dynamics C4 Systems Receives $19.5 Million Order on Marine Corps Tactical Data Network Contract

TAUNTON, Mass. – General Dynamics C4 Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), has been awarded a $19.5 million modification to its Tactical Data Network/Digital Technical Control (TDN/DTC) contract by the U.S. Marine Corps Systems Command. The Tactical Data Network and Digital Technical Control together make up the tactical data communications backbone for deployed Marine task forces.

Under terms of this contract modification, General Dynamics will upgrade the Marine Corps’ Data Distribution System (formerly called the TDN Server) by installing RAID-5 memory capability to selected units, allowing recovery of data in the event of disc drive failures, and by adding server capacity to Major Subordinate Command systems. The modification also provides for additional training and field support to Marine users in California and North Carolina. Options to outfit the remainder of the data distribution servers were included to be exercised as additional budget funds become available.

The TDN/DTC contract originally was awarded in January 1999 for $52 million. Since then options have been exercised to purchase additional systems, bringing the total value to more than $138 million, including this award.

The Data Distribution System provides unclassified and classified data communications capability over local area networks, Enhanced Position Location Reporting System (EPLRS) radios and the Tri-Tac tactical switched telephone network. It enables users to share files and use email, and provides transparent routing of digital messages between the local area networks, switched telephone networks, and single- and multi-channel radio subnetworks.

General Dynamics C4 Systems provides secure command, control, computing, communication and information solutions that integrate custom-developed and commercial off-the-shelf products for the military and commercial markets. It designs, integrates, and supports strategic and tactical battlefield communication systems, worldwide. It has pioneered automated approaches to mission planning; battlespace management; targeting/fire support; mapping, charting and geodesy and simulation for its military and commercial customers. It also provides environmentally hardened and special packaging of computer equipment and peripherals for both customer segments.

General Dynamics, headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia, employs approximately 54,000 people worldwide and anticipates 2002 revenues of $14 billion. The company has leading market positions in land and amphibious combat systems, mission-critical information systems and technologies, shipbuilding and marine systems, and business aviation.
