General Dynamics Awarded Army's Objective Force Warrior Agreement
FALLS CHURCH, Va. – General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) was awarded one of two lead technology integration agreements today for the U.S. Army’s Objective Force Warrior (OFW) program. The OFW program will provide the core network-centric system deployed by dismounted soldiers in the year 2010.
The $7.5 million award is for an eight-month concept development phase. Future phases have a potential value of $145 million over five years.
The Army’s vision for the Objective Force Warrior is of a highly lethal, survivable, networked soldier within a small combat team operating across a spectrum of future Army operations. The soldier will be equipped with self-protection gear, a range of weapons of varying lethality and information enhancement and management tools. The Objective Force Warrior will use assets such as robotic cargo transporters (called “mules”), networked sensor fields and unmanned air vehicles. These capabilities will be compatible with the Army’s Future Combat Systems program now in development.
The General Dynamics’ Objective Force Warrior effort is headed by its Eagle Enterprise unit, a company formed to address technology and integration challenges.
“The Objective Force Warrior will be the best-equipped, best-informed, best-protected warrior ever dispatched to defend America,” said Michael D. Bolon, president of Eagle Enterprise, a General Dynamics company. “We’re bringing the best technologies together to help the Army realize that vision.”
Eagle Enterprise will provide seasoned program management and ‘systems of systems’ integration for this project.
“The wisdom of this approach is that we are not bound to a specific solution or concept. Our intent is to harness the team’s expertise to select – in partnership with the Army and Natick Soldier Center – the best technology and ‘systems of systems’ solutions that reduce the weight carried by soldiers but significantly increase their lethality and survivability,” Bolon said.
General Dynamics, headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia, employs approximately 54,000 people and anticipates 2002 revenues of $14 billion. The company has leading market positions in land and amphibious combat systems, mission-critical information systems and technologies, shipbuilding and marine systems, and business aviation.
