DAHLGREN, Va. (NNS) -- Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Dahlgren dedicated a new building on Aug. 22 in honor of the late Congressman Herbert H. Bateman, who represented the 1st Congressional District of Virginia for 18 years.
This new facility, the Herbert H. Bateman Chemical Biological Defense Center, will plan and implement Navy survivability Research, Development, Testing and Evaluation (RDT&E) efforts against Chemical Biological Warfare threats. These RDT&E efforts are extended to the Operations Other Than War and Counterterrorism areas.
As the Navy's lead laboratory for joint activities in all aspects of Chemical-Biological defense, NSWC Dahlgren provides the technology base, threat analysis and the full spectrum of engineering expertise necessary to design and develop the equipment needed to protect Naval and Joint Services afloat and ashore.
The $8.6 million facility is a two-story, 35,000-square-foot building situated along the Potomac River and houses chemical and biological laboratories, test areas, bays, mockup centers, libraries and administrative offices to develop detectors, shipboard collective protection systems, modeling and simulation computer models.
