AF gets 60 new C-17s
08/21/02 - WASHINGTON (AFPN) -- The Air Force and Boeing Co. recently signed a $9.8 billion multiyear contract for 60 C-17 Globemaster III aircraft to be delivered to the Air Force through July 2008.
"(The C-17) is uniquely adapted to the challenges faced by today's transforming military, which needs to mobilize forces quickly and effectively whether against military adversaries or natural disasters," said George Muellner, vice president and general manager of Boeing's Air Force Systems, in a written release.
Since the C-17's first flight in 1991, Boeing has delivered 89 of the 120 transports purchased in the original contract by the Air Force.
C-17 crews have amassed more than 300,000 hours in the aircraft flying global airlift in support of both combat and humanitarian missions. Most recently, the C-17 has been used to ferry troops, equipment, supplies and humanitarian aid into Afghanistan.
The additional aircraft will bring the total number of C-17s in the Air Force inventory to 180.
