BAE SYSTEMS selected with General Dynamics team for the U.S. Army's Warfighter Information Network - Tactical (WIN-T) System

13 Aug 2002

BAE Systems has been selected as part of General Dynamics' team for one of two development contract awards for the next-generation Warfighter Information Network - Tactical for the U.S. Army. . WIN-T is the centerpiece of the Army's transformation plan for 21st century warfare. Anticipated total value for this two-phase development contract is up to$72 million.

Under the year-long Phase I of this contract, system engineering tasks to define and document the optimal WIN-T architecture will be performed. A demonstration suite of hardware/software will be developed and delivered for government early user testing under Phase II, the system development and demonstration (SDD) phase.

BAE Systems Communication, Navigation & Identification (CNI) business unit is the Transmission Subsystem supplier for the system. BAE Systems will support C3 architecture development, systems integration and networked radios.

"WIN-T is a key enabler of future war-fighting doctrine," said William Campbell, Vice President for Communications and Information Systems Integration, "By providing a robust, real-time network connecting Army and joint forces on the distributed battlefield, WIN-T will allow the Army to see first, decide first, act first, and mass effects without massing forces. It will give our troops a decisive battlefield advantage."

The General Dynamics-led team is comprised of premier air and ground system integrators and leading hardware providers, with demonstrated flexible system architecture design, modular approach and proven experience in large-scale systems integration. WIN-T team members are committed to developing the pioneering technologies that will support the Army's requirements for survivability, interoperability, network management, secure data transport and command and control on the move.

The WIN-T system will extend down to individual weapons platforms and will bring new capabilities and flexibility for troops in battle. By incorporating advanced terrestrial, airborne and space-based battle command systems, WIN-T will let the Army concentrate combat power by means other than massing its forces, which will make smaller units tougher and more lethal.

WIN-T will use commercially available products and standards to allow warfighters to exchange voice, video and data over wired or wireless systems, handling battlefield communications from the theater level down to individual battalions.
