First Eurofighter-Simulator delivered to German Air Force

German Air Force ready for Pilot Training

Munich, 01 August 2002

The first Eurofighter-Simulator was delivered this Thursday by EADS Military Aircraft. The German Air Force is now as the first of the four Eurofighter partner air force ready for pilot training.

The new simulator will first be used for the Instructor Pilot Training starting in April 2003 at EADS Military Aircraft in Manching. In Autumn 2003 the simulator and the first aircraft will be transfered to the first German Eurofighter wing, Jagdgeschwader 73 in Laage near Rostock, with training of the wing's pilot to be conducted there.

EADS Military Aircraft developed and built the system in only one year after contract signature. "The new simulator is a step towards the full mission simulator to be introduced by the air forces from 2004 onwards and therefore designated Interim Training Device. It is an advanced procedure trainer, tailored to the first steps of pilot training with special emphasis on procedure and weapons training", explains project leader Dr. Peter Hunkel.

The pilot "flies" in a cockpit that mirrors the actual aircraft. "The simulator consists of a cockpit, a three channel visual system (150° Azimuth, 40° Elevation) and an instructor console", describes Markus Schmid, technical head of the project. The instructor console is connected with a Debriefing-Recorder for evaluation of the simulated flights.

The flight simulation envelope will later alos be used in the full mission simulators. It simulates complex air-to-air scenarios with up to ten friendly or enemy targets like fighter aircraft, helicopters or tankers.

Delivery of the first Eurofighter to the German Air Force is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2002.

With revenues amounting to EUR 30.8 billion in 2001 (excluding Airbus UK) and a workforce of over 100,000, EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company is the largest European aerospace company and the No 2 worldwide.
