EADS: Manufacturing facility in Belgium taken over from Siemens N.V. - Expanding defence business

Amsterdam, 01 August 2002

EADS has taken over the Oostkamp plant of Siemens N.V. (Belgium) near Brugge to strengthen the manufacturing capabilities of its defence sector. After the approval of the merger control authorities on 31 July 2002, the acquisition now takes effect retroactively as of January 1, 2002.

"We have a longstanding relationship to Oostkamp being a substantial supplier to our defence programs. As we are expanding our defence business and ramping up production for important programs, it is very important to us to integrate the manufacturing capabilities of Oostkamp and the experience of its employees into our production strategy", explained Stefan Zoller, CEO and President of EADS Systems & Defence Electronics.

The Oostkamp plant with about 250 employees has been supplying for years high frequency modules to EADS' radar and communication systems in several defence programs, particularly the Eurofighter. "Oostkamp with its advanced technological standard in millimeter-wave modules and high-precision manufacturing and testing is a valuable completion of our capabilities", states Johann Heitzmann, Senior Vice President of the Airborne Systems unit.

EADS Systems & Defence Electronics with a workforce of about 6,000 employees in Germany, France and the UK is one of the most important suppliers of defence electronics systems in Europe. It is delivering core electronic systems to major procurement programs such as the A400M transport aircraft, Eurofighter, the Tiger helicopter and the German K130 corvettes, as well as command & control and drone systems.

With revenues amounting to EUR 30.8 billion (2001) and more than 100,000 employees EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company is the largest aerospace and defence company in Europe and number two worldwide.
