BAE SYSTEMS-IFS selected for Gripen support risk reduction
22 Jul 2002
BAE Systems-IFS has been selected by Saab Aerospace as the preferred supplier and first choice with whom to begin negotiations, for the risk reduction activity for the Maintenance and Ground Support System (MGSS) for the Gripen new-generation swing-role fighter. The MGSS will be used to support Gripen aircraft for export customers and internally across the entire Saab Aerospace organisation.
Work is likely to begin on risk reduction for the Maintenance Ground Support System (MGSS) project with the Gripen flight test centre in Linkoping, Sweden, later this year. The MGSS will be used to monitor the health and usage of aircraft based on data provided electronically from the aircraft, from maintenance and ground support staff and customer representatives.
MGSS will manage configuration control of aircraft, engine and equipment, and provide a means of data interchange between Gripen customers and Saab Aerospace, which manufactures the multi-role fighter at its Linkoping plant. MGSS provides an essential element of the Gripen maintenance concept and comprises a seamless support package including components for maintenance planning and monitoring, fault reporting and comments/queries from/to the customer. MGSS also includes components for spares handling and for Interactive Electronic Technical Publications.
Engineering Services at Saab have a requirement for an integrated environment that will enable it to support the customer in the provision of a variety of services. These services will be offered to the customer either as part of the contract, or as options to be negotiated. The system will provide a flexible, modular contractor logistics support solution, allowing Gripen International, the company responsible for marketing, selling and supporting the Gripen fighter world-wide, to deliver customised support services to its export customers.
Simon Dowler, Managing Director of BAE Systems-IFS, said, 'We look forward to supporting the worldwide deployment of Gripen with our advanced solution for defence, ensuring that Gripen requires minimal support infrastructure and delivers a new-generation of superior flight line availability and low through-life cost.'
