BAE SYSTEMS wins UK MOD Contract for the Terrier Armoured Combat engineering Vehicle

17 Jul 2002

Public debut at Farnborough International 2002

BAE Systems is pleased to have been selected by the UK MOD for the TERRIER programme, the next generation air-transportable armoured combat engineer vehicle for the Royal Engineers. The requirement is for a wide utility vehicle with reduced logistic support requirements that will support both the current force structure and the future with FRES (Future Rapid Effects System). The contract value is 350 million and covers development, production and the initial phase of Contractor Logistic Support (CLS).

Clive Richardson, Managing Director of BAE Systems RO Defence, said, "TERRIER is a very important success for RO Defence and follows a hard fought campaign. The TERRIER contract complements the company's strategy to develop our prime contract and systems integration business, and will help sustain and grow the engineering base at Leicester".

RO Defence's TERRIER system solution and its innovative forward development plan exploits the skill sets deployed, the technologies used, and the lessons learnt with LANCER. In particular, the experience gained in the development and testing of the vehicle electrical and electronic architecture leading to full system integration will be a vital asset to the TERRIER programme.

The RO Defence approach will help sustain and restructure the UK military vehicle capability with Alvis Vehicles Limited, our team partner, being a key subcontractor for engineering and manufacturing activities.

Working against the mission requirements RO Defence will deliver a cost driven design that features:

* Maximum operational flexibility
* Maximum availability
* Crew friendly environment
* Minimised requirement for logistic support
* Maximised use of commercial processes/assets to provide logistic support over a 30 year service life/li>

The TERRIER vehicle system has a Battle weight of less than 31.5 tonnes. The vehicle is equipped with a range of Special-to-Role equipment to achieve the specific required missions and Engineer Tasks. A two-man crew operates the system, either head out or closed down under armour.

When closed down operations can be viewed either through direct vision devices by day or through indirect vision devices by day and night. The vehicle also has the interface for a remote control system, which would permit safe operation in hazardous environments. It is fitted with an externally mounted 7.62mm General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), self-defence weapon. The vehicle system is designed for operation in the most extreme climatic conditions without deterioration of its operational effectiveness.

RO Defence formed a dedicated pan-industry Integrated Project Team (IPT) some 3 years ago. It was this team that undertook the TERRIER risk mitigation programme that was successfully concluded in June 2001. This IPT structure has been sustained through MOD's procurement process and will now be deployed and augmented with additional skills to address the activities associated with the subsequent phases of the TERRIER programme.
